Sales of GM in China were up a solid 12.2 percent in October, indicating another good month for the Chinese auto market as whole.

Sales of GM in China, which cover most segments, have proven as a reliable indicator for the health of the overall market. GM and its joint ventures sold 282,446 vehicles in China last month.

Shanghai GM sold 132,954 vehicles in China during October, a year-on-year increase of 13.0 percent. SAIC-GM-Wuling’s domestic sales rose 10.7 percent to 143,693 units. FAW-GM sold 5,407 vehicles in the domestic market, a jump of 27.0 percent. The resurgence of small commercial vehicles sold by Wuling indicates an economy that is gaining new strength.

China’s auto sales were up 19.7 percent in September, while those of GM’s rose 13.7 percent. The annual Golden Week holiday, which this year was from September 30 to October 7, makes comparisons tricky. Therefore, both September and October should be used together for comparisons.

GM is in a leadership race with Volkswagen in China. In the past months, Volkswagen zoomed past GM in China sales.
