Japanese new car registrations dragged down by kei cars in July

Japan’s new car registrations were down 7.6 percent in July, according to data by industry associations. Sales continue to be dragged down by mini vehicles. Regular cars were down slightly. Imports to the allegedly closed market are strong.

The kei kar kichi Japanese market continues to digest a run on the m mini vehicles before the tax on the small cars went up in April. Registrations of mini vehicles were down 18.1 percent in July. Regular vehicles were down only 1.3 percent for an aggregate drop of 7.6 percent.

Despite the weaker yen, registrations of imports, up 5.4 percent, continue to be strong. Imports hold a nearly 9 [percent share of Japan’s regular vehicles.
