When Matthias Müller took over from disgraced Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn in the wake of dieselgate, he promised a complete “Kulturwandel,” a radical change of culture at the lurching automaker. A year later, the German automaker is back to its former ADD self, as in arrogance, deception and denial. All it takes is a look at last week. With newfound brazenness, Volkswagen denied having broken the law by outfitting its diesel engines with defeat devices. And as if to confirm that the company refuses to learn from history, Volkswagen fired a historian who didn’t agree with a whitewashing of Audi’s Nazi past.
