2014 Tokyo Auto Salon: Hachi-Roku mania abating, ever so slowly

Kirei desu nee!

Kirei desu nee!

Last year’s Tokyo Auto Salon was a hachi-roku orgy. Every booth had at least three of the Toyota/Subaru/86/BRZ/FRS. This year, it’s down to a hachi-roku at, oh, every other booth. (Subjective sample.) Sure, they are still popular with the manga crowd.

What else is new.

This hachi-roku fails to excite even its own booth personnel.

Hot air.

The aftermarket is still alive and well. But we don’t see 86  different blowers for the 86 this year. This CFRP airbox wasn’t a crowd magnet.

Sure, Toyota has a bunch on display, but they look a bit forlorn.

Concepts of topless hachi-roku have been shown and sundry shows. In Tokyo, they elicit a meh from the masses. Seen it before!

The trend seems to go to heavier iron, like this Mark X, for instance.

And speaking of heavy: Nissan’s GT-R is making big inroads. It is present at many booths at the show.

But even at slightly lower levels: The hachi-roku still dominates the show.

Some of them with understated elegance.

Hachi-roku: Good clean fun for the whole family.
