Renault’s Zoe gets range-stretching engine – but what about the Nissan Leaf?

Zoe

IHS, the company that also owns a private sector military intelligence network that goes by the name of Jane’s, spotted a new engine that improves the range of Renault’s electric Zoe by 20km. Slated to appear in the 2015 model, the new engine is said to be more “compact, lighter and efficient than the present engine which powers the ZOE, thus offering a range increase of 8%.”

Says IHS (and dammit, could Microsoft’s church-going autocorrect PLEASE stop changing “IHS” to “HIS” whenever I type it, please?????): [ There is more … ]

Chart of the day: Tesla’s hot air superiority

tesla-renaultedit

In the past weeks, Tesla has come under increasing criticism for creating more puff than product. Jalopnik wrote yesterday:

“So where are those battery-swapping stations Tesla promised? Or its big push into the energy storage biz? Didn’t we hear something about the Roadster being upgraded? Are we seeing a pattern here? Cut through the hype and the accolades and the endless profiles couching Elon Musk as Tony Stark, and you’re met with a long string of Tesla over-promising, under-delivering, or delivering late.”

The trouble is, as much as Tesla loves to hype its disrupting of the car business, data to prove the claims are short in coming. Elon Musk himself is famous for withholding data. He would be foolish if he would release data, because numbers would prove that emperor Musk has no clothes. Musk may be naked, but he is no fool. As long as most people think that Tesla reigns supreme in the EV space, why should he contradict them? [ There is more … ]

The big European turn-around that appeared to finally have collected enough courage in the past two months, already ran out of steam in November. Sales across the EU were up a mere 1.4 percent in November, Europe’s manufacturer association ACEA reports. What little growth there is more or less goes on account of Mediterranean countries where new cars sales pretty much had come to a halt last year during the financial crisis. [ There is more … ]

Swag the dog: The shitstorm that could stop all junkets

Swag? Ask the Urban Dictionary

Swag? Ask the Urban Dictionary

Yesterday, Noah Joseph, a writer for Autoblog, went semi-public on Facebook, demanding more gifts from OEMs. “Am I the only one who misses a bit of swag from press events?” Joseph asked the members of an allegedly secret Facebook group (1024 members,) dedicated to writing about cars. It was a loaded question. Joseph not only shot himself in both feet, he took more than a few of his colleagues with him, and it may very well be the shot that signaled the end of lavish press junkets.
