The race for World’s Largest Automaker just got a tiny bit more interesting

Toyota today announced new global sales forecasts of 10 million units, that’s 150,000 less than the previous forecast. This revised forecast reflects overall sluggish sales in China and emerging markets. Despite the revision, it looks like Toyota will remain the world’s largest automaker.

The forecast is for the fiscal year running from April 1 2015 through March 31 2016. The annual sales crown is bestowed according to calendar year data.

10 million units is pretty close to our latest projection for the calendar year anyway. That projection has Toyota some 100,000 units ahead of Volkswagen. Also, Volkswagen is expected to show some dieselgate-related weakness for the rest of the year. Nevertheless, the title race has become a tiny bit more interesting.
