BEVs in Germany: An even more disastrous July for Tesla as is disrupts its own factory

Germany’s BEV market was up 13.2% year-on-year in July, while registrations of all passenger vehicles dropped by 13.9% in the same period. Tesla did not take part in that BEV-bonanza. After a disastrous end-of-the-quarter in June, Tesla clocks in with an ultra-disastrous July: Only 1,184 Teslas were registered in Germany in July, data supplied by Germany’s regulator KBA show. That’s a paltry 4.1% of Germany’s burgeoning BEV-market.

95.9% of Germany’s BEV sales were by those legacy dinosaur automakers Tesla wanted to disrupt years ago. What was disrupted instead was Tesla’s German factory in Grünheide, Brandenburg. Three months after the factory was opened with great fanfare, it was shut down for re-work. Aerial shots of the Grünheide plant show piles of scrapped car bodies, others show failed giga-casts.  According to reports, Tesla’s ballyhooed gigantic casting machine produces outcasts at a rate of around 50%.

Meanwhile, the dinosaurs are recovering from their supply-chain problems. Volkswagen has gained 30.9% BEV-market share, followed by Stellantis with 22.5%.

Year-to-date, Tesla’s BEV share in German hovers at slightly under 10%, and in a similar area as 139 year old Daimler and 106 year old BMW. Don’t you think it’s time for a mercy killing of that wheezing disruption narrative?

And why should you care about BEV sales in Germany?

Germany is not only Europe’s largest car market, it also is (by far) Europe’s largest market for BEVs. In July, 14% of all passenger vehicles were BEVs.  Germany also is one Europe’s hottest BEV markets with registrations of battery-electric vehicles growing 13.2% year-on-year in July, while registrations of all passenger vehicles dropped by 13.9% in the same period. Most of all, Germany has Europe’s largest concentration of automakers. If you want an early view of where the EU car market is heading, look at Germany, and don’t let yourself be sidetracked by data from Norway.
