World’s Largest Automakers 2/25: Toyota looking good, boosted by statistics

With global group sales for January and February in the books, our leaderboard stays

With global group sales for January and February in the books, our leaderboard stays increasingly uneventful as Toyota Group keeps dominating as it has been done for years. Its sudden spike in sales is not a sign of new vigor, but mostly a statistical fluke.

Global Toyota Group sales, up 9.5% YOY in February and 5.5% Jan-Feb,  were saved by a very strong home market. Sales in Japan rose 28.2%, driven by domestic car launches and mostly by a low base in February 2024, where sales were buffeted by a certification scandal. Elsewhere in the world, sales were mostly flat.

Hyundai Group is treading water.

Volkswagen reports group sales on a quarterly basis only. Next data in a month for January through March 2025.

Caveat: All sales data as reported by the respective automaker. Note that “sales” can be an elastic term, some OEMs report hard registrations, some “sales to wholesale,” which can mean cars placed on dealer lots, or transferred to the OEM’s sales organization. Methods may differ from region to region. Some report “deliveries,” which can be nothing more than cars moved out of the factory door.
