China’s SAIC disrupts Tesla in Germany
Turmoil in Deutschland: China’s SAIC was the OEM with the second-largest number of BEVs registered in Germany in the month of June. SAIC registered 4,492 of its electric MG4 in Germany, out-classing Tesla’s Model Y by more than 1,000 units. Best-selling BEV in Germany was Volkswagen’s ID.3. Five out of the top ten BEVs were Volkswagen Group models.
June was not a good month for battery-powered cars in Germany. Registrations of all passenger vehicles rose 6.1% y/y in June, while sales of BEV cratered by 18.1%.
Anything ICE was up by the double digits. Gasoline-powered cars rose 12.1%, sales of diesel cars grew by 12.4%, and those of hybrids increased by 12.4%.
With its June registrations down by 42.2%. Tesla was the biggest loser among the top BEV brands.
SAIC Motor, formerly Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, is a long-time joint venture partner of Volkswagen. Bankrupt MG was merged into SAIC in 2007 .
