Suzuki’s Dalliance With Toyota, A Prelude For LTR

“If we don’t share, we won’t survive,” said Osamu Suzuki, chairman of Suzuki Motors, today. The auto industry’s grand seigneur gave a whole new meaning to “share society” at the Tokyo headquarters of Toyota, where Suzuki, flanked by a much younger Aiko Toyoda, announced what a reporter in the room characterized as an “engagement between Suzuki and Toyota.” Of course, that’s not the official line. Yet.

German Transport Minister: ICE Ban By 2030 “Utter Nonsense”

Calls for an end of the internal combustion engine by 2030 in Germany are “utter nonsense,” the country’s Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt said yesterday to Germany’s wire service DPA. “A complete end of the internal combustion engine from 2030 on would be totally unrealistic,” the minister continued. Plans to end the sale of all Verbrennungsmotoren would have to be made and approved by his office, and it doesn’t sound like they are. The ICE ban remains a dream of the more rabid among the proponents of all-electric transportation.

Electric vehicles are about to disrupt the auto industry, many are convinced. What is holding EVs back are range, and price, pundits say. According to recent announcements in Paris, the range part is being worked on. Now there is word that the price part is also being addressed with something thought impossible: A low cost electric vehicle. The disruption appears to be imminent. Disappointingly to some, the disruptor is an over 100 year old car maker, and the genius engineer behind the project just turned 70.
