Friday Morning Auto News, Jun 06, 2025: From bros to foes. Trump might dump the red Tesla. China warns BYD. More.
Germany BEV Monthly, 5/25: Garbage tier Tesla.
BEVs are doing great in Europe’s largest auto market Germany. All BEVs, except those of formerly proud Tesla. In May, German registrations of battery-operated vehicles zoomed ahead by 44.9% YOY, while registrations of Teslas plummeted by 36.2%, data released by Germany regulator Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt KBA show. January through May 2025, Tesla’s German registrations were down a whopping 57.7%. Tesla’s miserable situations is mirrored in most EU markets, except tiny Norway.
Tesla is drunk on a witch-brew of bad news. It is lacking new models, the lifeblood of car marketing. Tesla is at home in the wrong country. Tesla always has been the quintessential American brand, even more so when CEO Elon Musk became a quasi-President. Trump’s antics made America widely unpopular in Europe. Making matters worse, Elon Musk’s right-wing activities did cost him the key progressive target demographics of EVs. The Musk-Trump feud of the previous days is not reflected in the numbers, bullish it is not.
With only 1,210 units sold in May, Tesla has become a garbage-tier BEV player. Tesla was even outsold by BEVs of BYD, a newcomer to the German market. Meanwhile, half of Germany’s BEVs rolled off the assembly lines of Volkswagen Group, an automaker Tesla-fans predicted to be bankrupt years ago.
The Top Ten of Germany’s BEVs are quasi-monopolized by Volkswagen Group BEVs. Hopes of Tesla boosters rested on a massively pent-up demand for the company’s refreshed Model Y, but it turned into a fizzle. With Made-in-Germany Model Ys having been delivered for several month now, the car managed only place 12 of Germany’s BEV-seller list.
