Reporters banned from tweeting during GM’s shareholders conference, can tweet freely at Nissan’s

In an attempt to win friends and influence the influencers, GM “prohibited reporters from e-mailing from within its shareholder meeting,” an obviously miffed Bloomberg reporter Tim Higgins wrote. Reporters had a choice of watching the proceedings in situ, but with a smartphone off. Or they could go to a separate room, where they were served coffee, bagels, and the meeting on monitors. They were not allowed to photograph or videotape the monitors.

The interesting part: There are people who think keeping reporters from doing their job is the right thing to do. [ There is more … ]

Years ago, and ever since, Western prognosticators said the Chinese car market was in bubble-territory, and ready to roll over. Last month, as in the months and years before, the market ignored the negative vibes, and powered on. According to data released by China’s manufacturers’ association CAAM, May sales were up 8.5 percent year-on-year to 1,911,200 units across all segments. For the first five months of the year, sales are up 9 percent to 9,838,100 units. The van is a love child of Nissan’s LEAF and its NV200 van. From the LEAF, it inherited the drivetrain, and the face. From the NV200, it received the brawn of a 9-5 multi-role street fighter that can carry a big load. [ There is more … ]

Phony Car War With China Gets Real In Canada

The United State’s phony “car war” with China may be more political rhetoric than business reality, but Canadian labor union Unifor (successor to the Canadian Auto Workers) seems prepared to switch to live ammunition. Reuters reports that Unifor is threatening a strike on Johnson Controls Inc’s plant in Whitby, Ontario in hopes shutting down the GM Oshawa plant it supplies. Unifor thinks that by hurting GM at Oshawa it will leverage pressure on JCI to change its plans to shut down the Whitby interior plant. Unfortunately a peaceful resolution is unlikely. As Reuters reported last month, JCI is transferring its entire interior supply business to a joint venture with a subsidy of GM’s main Chinese partner SAIC. GM will not fight an SAIC-related merger on behalf of Unifor, and as a result Canada can look to Australia for hints at the future of its auto industry. [ There is more … ]
