“Trump’s tough trade talk makes U.S. firms fear China retribution.” Reuters wrote today. The company that is the most exposed to China is American carmaker General Motors. GM sells more cars in China than in all of North America. A crisis in China could easily break the back of GM.

Tests conducted by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission “suggest that Audi has manipulated the diesel engine of its best-seller A3,” Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung wrote today in an exclusive report. The findings are explosive far beyond Volkswagen: Germany’s regulator Kraftfahrtbundesamt also tested the Audi’s diesel-powered A3, and gave it a clean bill of health – after “apparently omitting crucial tests,” the paper writes. EU politicians speak of collusion between governments and automakers.

That Toyota would eventually launch its first compact crossover, the C-HR, was one of the company’s worst-kept secrets. In the works since late 2009, and debuted at the Geneva Motor Show early this year, a C-HR raced around the Nürburg Ring in May. In the U.S., the C-HR was formally announced at the LA Motor Show last November. Inevitably, Verticalscope has long launched a C-HR forum, which competes with another one in the UK for attention. Nevertheless, when the C-HR was presented to the Japanese press yesterday, we had to act as if we had never heard of something called C-HR, we were sworn to great secrecy, and not to breathe the word C-HR until a day later. This time, it didn’t make sense to break an embargo, so we kept it.

Report: Volkswagen’s Dieselgate Criminal Settlement To Be Decided By Trump’s Hardliners

Under the “Trapped by Trump” headline, Germany’s BILD tabloid reported over the weekend that Volkswagen has to fear the worst from the new administration. Per the report, the U.S. Department of Justice won’t decide on the settlement of criminal charges against Volkswagen before the regime-change in DC. The report wrote of a “horror scenario: The Trump team with future Attorney General Jeff Sessions won’t make a deal, and it will broaden the criminal probe. Volkswagen would be exposed to the capriciousness of an unpredictable government, Volkswagen fears.”
