What does the congressional grilling of Akio Toyoda have to do with the Mirai FCV? More than we imagine

Time to reflect

Time to reflect

Today, 5 years ago, on February 24, 2010, Toyoda CEO Akio Toyoda was mercilessly grilled in a show trial at the U.S. Congress for unintended acceleration that did, according to NASA, never happen.  Picture Mark Fields, or Mary Barra, being screamed at in Chinese, or Japanese, by lawmakers in Beijing, or Tokyo, and you won’t begin to fathom the intentional trauma. Today, February 24, 2015, the production start of Toyota’s fuel cell vehicle, the Mirai, was celebrated in a line-off ceremony at the Motomachi plant in Toyota City, Japan. Just a happenstance? Not really. [ There is more … ]

Heads roll at Honda: Ito out, Hachigo in

Got a tissue? Takanobu Ito

Got a tissue? Takanobu Ito

A “surprise move” it was not: Tokyo was rife with rumors about the impeding ouster of Honda CEO Takanobu Ito in the latter part of last week, but the rumors were doggedly denied. Today, Monday, a flash invitation requested the Tokyo press corps to make an appearance at 5pm, and everybody knew what was coming. Ito fell into a sword made by Takata, and he was replaced by a chubby, but otherwise faceless functionary.
Ito and the rest of Honda’s top management took a pay cut last year to atone for a long series of recalls prompted by exploding Takata air bag inflators. It wasn’t enough of a sacrifice, and today, Ito’s head was served on a platter.

Zai jian China, we look back at the final years of Chinese auto shows with female characteristics

The working masses

The toiling masses

In one of its infamous “strike hard” campaigns, China has outlawed suggestively dressed models at car shows. Apparently in an effort to curb the onslaught of masses that had choked past shows, there won’t be those infamous “scantily clad” women at this year’s Shanghai Auto Show. Which gave us the opportunity for a nostalgic look back at a paradise lost. After re-visiting Beijing 2010 and Shanghai 2011, after traveling to Beijing again in 2012, we will revisit the past two years today, before closing the books on the sad affair. In the end, you will agree that future shows are not worth going to, and you are right. [ There is more … ]

Requiem for the scantily clad girl: We revisit the golden years of the Chinese car show

Beijing 2012

Beijing 2012

We were gathered here yesterday, on this sorrowful occasion, to say goodbye to the sadly departed scantily clad models at Chinese car shows. After taking away the wine and wife from karaoke bars around the country, after shutting down a whole city, China’s capital of vice, Chinese authorities now have their sights set on automakers who interpret the “reveal” part of auto shows to liberally.

The Shanghai Auto Show 2015 (April 20-29) will be a wholesome family affair, and I won’t be going. Instead, and with a tear in my eye, I will look back at the times when a Chinese auto show still was worth visiting.
