Despite herculean end-of-quarter push, Tesla remains dwarfed by Deutschland’s dinosaurs

Germany’s burgeoning  BEV market was re-arranged in June as Tesla took the #2 spot with a huge end-of-quarter push that added 4, 466 Teslas to Germany’s road.  Volkswagen’s share of the BEV market shrank a bit to 33.7%, down from 36.2% in the previous month.

Except for four Model X sold in Germany in June, Tesla is pretty much all Model 3. At the end of the list, Ford brought 231 Mustang Mach-E to Germany in June, Toyota fielded four battery-powered Proace vans and three electric Lexus UX.

Despite laying on a maximum effort in June to squeeze every imaginable sale into the quarter, Tesla remains outclassed by the dinosaurs it sought to disrupt. January through June, legacy automakers sold 134,948 BEVs in Germany, ten times the BEVs Tesla sold to Germans in the first half of the year. Tesla’s year-to-date share of the BEV market remains at 9%.

With only 13,768 Teslas sold in Germany in the first half of the year, one wonders why Elon Musk is in such a hurry to erect a car factory in woodsy Grünheide near Germany’s capital Berlin.
